The RCSLT Professional Development Framework was launched in March 2023 after a year of co-production with members and stakeholders. It was designed to support speech and language therapy professionals by addressing several key needs:
- Helping members map their existing skills and experience levels.
- Guiding them in identifying future development pathways and the steps needed to achieve them.
- Highlighting transferable skills when exploring new roles and career opportunities.
- Providing tools and frameworks to encourage fresh perspectives on career development.
Structure of the Framework
The framework consists of two parts. The first part encourages speech and language therapists to reflect on key areas, as illustrated in the diagram below:
The framework is highly flexible, allowing therapists and their colleagues to engage in meaningful conversations about careers and continuous professional development (CPD). Here are some ways it can be used:
- Self-reflection or guided discussions: Therapists can work through the framework independently or with the support of a trusted colleague, supervisor, mentor, or critical friend. The most valuable aspect of the framework often lies in the discussions it sparks, which foster deeper reflection and learning about professional development needs.
- Identifying learning opportunities: The framework provides detailed topic areas that can help therapists pinpoint relevant courses, secondments, or other learning experiences to support career progression. Some services have used it to conduct training needs analyses and plan group CPD accordingly.
- Tracking career progression: Speech and language therapists can revisit the framework at different career stages to assess their progress and identify new areas for growth. Members have found it particularly useful during the preceptorship period, when returning to practice, transitioning between sectors, or articulating advanced and expert-level knowledge for career advancement. This includes roles that extend beyond professional boundaries, such as senior management and executive positions.
- Preparing for CPD audits: The framework serves as a valuable resource for preparing for the HCPC CPD audit, ensuring members can clearly articulate their professional development.
Growth-Based Careers
The framework also introduces the concept of growth-based careers, encouraging professionals to move away from the traditional "career ladder" mindset. It validates the idea that career growth is not solely about moving up; broadening experience at the same level can be just as valuable.
The Kawa Approach
A key concept introduced in the framework is the Kawa approach. Derived from the Kawa Model (Iwama, 2006; Teoh & Iwama, 2015), this approach originates from occupational therapy and has gained traction in coaching, professional development, and career planning.
The term Kawa means "river" in Japanese, and the model uses the metaphor of a river to illustrate the fluid nature of careers. Just as a river takes twists and turns, so do careers. The framework encourages individuals to actively shape the direction of their own career "rivers," making choices that align with their personal and professional aspirations. It also allows us to acknowledge that our career, as an individual river, is part of a broader ecosystem.
