Review of the standards of education and training

The standards of education and training (SETs) are designed to make sure that learners are prepared for safe and effective practice.

We review our standards periodically to ensure that they are up-to date with current practice.

Aims of the review

Through the review we will:

  • identify changes to current practice and, if appropriate, reflect these in the SETs;
  • identify ways to strengthen the SETs that enable education providers to prepare learners for professional practice effectively;
  • ensure the SETs are appropriately aligned with other HCPC standards; and
  • ensure that education providers can implement any changes effectively.

Where are we now?

We’re currently in the pre-consultation phase of our review. This phase includes research activities and working closely with a wide range of stakeholders to listen and gather insights through workshops and surveys.

We have also been working with a set of expert panels (drawn from a range of education providers, professional bodies and academics to understand their views on some key themes -artificial intelligence, simulation in learning, equality, diversity and inclusion, and different models of learning.

This research and pre-consultation engagement will help to shape any proposed changes to the SETs. We will then be launching a formal public consultation later this year.

Engagement opportunities in the pre-consultation phase

During this pre-consultation phase, we will target our engagement towards stakeholders that are most impacted by changes to the SETs – for example education providers, professional bodies, employers and learners.

We are currently engaging with learners to capture their views on the standards through a dedicated survey for this group.

In early April we are hosting a workshop for education providers to share an overview of the review and discuss key topics.

What are the next steps?

  1. Launch of a formal public consultation later this year
  2. Publication of the outcome of the review and any revisions to the standards
  3. Implementation phase
  4. Revised standards come into effect
